Goal Setting that Really Works

7 Minutes to Set Goals and Reach Them

Welcome to the Strong(her) You Podcast! I’m your host Diane, founder of A Strong(her) You and the Strong(her) Woman Members Club. Let’s get started with our topic for today, setting goals.

While most of us are familiar with the idea of setting goals at work or in school, most of us haven’t discovered the power of setting goals in our everyday lives.

Why am I such a fan of setting goals? And how can it help in your daily life?

I’m so glad you asked because I’m going to tell you!

When we set a goal, there are a few special things that happen:

First, we are deliberately making that thing important, and we’re consciously saying, I want to achieve this! That’s important, especially if we are going to take steps towards making that goal a reality.

Second, when we set a goal, we increase our awareness. It’s like saying, I know that I want to do this. Setting that goal is going to make it far more likely that you can achieve the goal that you’ve set.

What kinds of goals should you be setting?

The answer is any kind! There is no goal too small or too big to start working towards.

Maybe, for example, you just want to start jogging, maybe you want to learn how to invest, maybe you want to shoot for the moon and start your own business, or you want to get a dog.

You name it, whatever it is that you want to achieve you can help yourself make that goal a reality by deliberately setting a goal to start working towards.

Important note ladies: Goals are not “ONE SIZE FITS ALL”! Goals are uniquely personal and are different for every woman. Your goals should be all about helping you be the balanced, happy woman you want to be and about shaping your life in a positive way.

Remember what I said about no goal being too small to be important? Well, it’s true!

Maybe you have a takeout habit and want to start eating healthier. It’s ok if your first goal towards achieving that is just to swap out the steamed veggies for the French fries with your take out. It’s not your end result, but rather a step towards what it is you are trying to achieve.

Maybe your goals are much larger, a financial goal. Saving towards a house or a condo, that’s great! You still have to start small: put your loose change in a jar every day. It may not be much at first but it will add up over time and it will help you start creating the habit.

The biggest mistake that we can make is putting the pressure on ourselves that we have to make a drastic change overnight. Don’t try it, ladies, it will not work! Be kind to yourself and be patient, any progress that gets you closer to your goal is amazing and should be celebrated because you’re making the time to set a goal and start making a positive change in your life.

My biggest tips for setting goals that you can actually reach?

make the goals realistic and meaningful

Be sure to take note of why you want to achieve the goal you’ve set as well. Because you’re going to need motivation down the road and that why is going to help you stay focused and keep motivated. It’s not always going to be easy when you’re working towards a goal, so plan ahead and have a way to motivate yourself already built into your plan.

Write your goals down

Now, there are dozens of great goal planners on the market, you can also keep it super simple and buy a small notebook, use some scrap paper, whatever gets the job done. Write those goals down! Jot it down and you’re already on your way to achieving it! Because writing that goal down makes it more tangible and increases the likelihood that you’re going to remember it, hold yourself accountable and work towards it.

If you do feel that you need a little extra guidance with setting goals and staying on track I have developed an awesome goal setting worksheet. You can download FOR FREE here.

As we wrap up today’s episode, I want to take a little time and share an inspiring quote with you. It’s from Tony Robbins and it’s all about setting goals and achieving them:

“Setting goals is the first step in turning the invisible into the visible.”

Remember to believe in yourself, take that first step, and start working to make your goals a reality!
